Pre School
The Pre-school Room “The Unicorns”
The Unicorns is our busiest room, registered for 32. This age group, on it’s busier days is split between the upstairs nursery rooms and the Garden Room working on a 1:8 staff to child ratio, however often the ratio is lower due to additional practitioners. The Garden room concentrates on school readiness and has smaller numbers, allowing the Pre-school team to work with each child on a one to one basis, and for smaller group activities, encouraging further concentration, and more challenging activities with different equipment and resources. The children are able to free flow into the main garden from the Garden room, and they enjoy a day of learning through play separate from the nursery building. The main Unicorn room in the nursery is located on the over two’s first floor, adjacent to the extra activities room, and consists of a messy room and carpeted play room similar to the other age groups. Our Unicorns focusses on specific areas including Mathematics, ICT, Small World, Construction, Literacy, Messy Play, Mark making, Role-Play, and Creative Play. The Unicorns prepares all of the children for school alongside the play and ensures the children are equipped in managing the skills required to cope well in a reception class, confidently and with enthusiasm.

Our Pre School Room (Unicorns Room) is led under the guidance of a Qualified Early Years Room Leader, supported by an Excellent Staff Team.
ROOM NAME: Pre School
AGE GROUP* : 3 years – 5 years
*A child will be moved up into this room based on the child’s development and not age.
This room provides the children with opportunity to enjoy a wider range of age appropriate toys and play equipment. Thus facilitating a diversity of activities, such as role-play in the ‘home corner’ to quieter activities i.e. Jigsaws, or reading in our ‘book corner’.
The scenario of this room is changed regularly to fit in around our planned themes. This allows children to explore new environments and experiences and to make full use of their imagination.
The children are introduced to all the necessary skills required to give them educational building blocks for their future. They experience pre-reading and writing skills, and have opportunity to obtain an understanding of numerical concepts.
Children are guided through play and their own discovery, into a wider learning sphere, equipping them for their move on to more formal education.
Theme work ensures that all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage are covered continuously and the children are active in the planning of the EYFS.
